High Frequency Evidence on the Demand for Gasoline
نویسندگان
چکیده
Daily city-level expenditures and prices are used to estimate the price responsiveness of gasoline demand in the U.S. Using a frequency of purchase model that explicitly acknowledges the distinction between gasoline demand and gasoline expenditures, we consistently find the price elasticity of demand to be an order of magnitude larger than estimates from recent studies using more aggregated data. We demonstrate directly that higher levels of spatial and temporal aggregation generate increasingly inelastic demand estimates, and then perform a decomposition to examine the relative importance of several different sources of bias likely to arise in more aggregated studies. ∗VISA Decision Sciences, 901 Metro Center Boulevard, Mail Stop: M3-2B Foster City, CA 94404-2775, [email protected] †John E. Estimating and Forecasting Petroleum Demand in OECD Countries (Gasoline, Jet Fuel and Diesel)
Today, factors such as increasing energy efficiency, use of alternative fuels, and application of new fuel standards and new environmental laws in OECD countries have led to wide-range of changes in the structure of demand for fossil fuels. Given the importance of light derivatives, namely gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in the demand basked of OECD countries we focus on these products. We use ...
متن کاملUsing Social and Economic Indicators for Modeling, Sensitivity Analysis and Forecasting the Gasoline Demand in the Transportation Sector: An ANN Approach in case study for Tehran metropolis
Compared to the conventional methods, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are considered to be one of the reliable tools for modeling of complex phenomena such as demand. Aim of this study is to provide a model for gasoline demand in transportation section of Tehran metropolis through multilayered perceptron neural network and using the presented model in analyzing the sensitivity of the model to ...
متن کاملModeling Gasoline Consumption Behaviors in Iran Based on Long Memory and Regime Change
In this study, for the first time, we model gasoline consumption behavior in Iran using the long-term memory model of the autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average and non-linear Markov-Switching regime change model. Initially, the long-term memory feature of the ARFIMA model is investigated using the data from 1927 to 2017. The results indicate that the time series studied has a lo...
متن کاملThe Effect of Green Taxes on Labor Productivity in the Iranian Economy
his study attempts to examine the empirical relationship between gasoline taxes (as the most effective energy carrier of emissions) and labor productivities in the case of Iran using the time series data for the period 1990-2015 usingthe autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach. This research tests the interrelationship between the variables using the bounds testing to cointegration proc...
متن کاملDifferential demand response to gasoline taxes and prices in the U.S
This paper offers new evidence concerning the difference in consumers’ reactions to changes in gasoline taxes relative to changes in gasoline prices. Using microdata from the 2007 to 2009 rounds of the U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey, we estimate a complete system of demand augmented with information on gasoline excise taxes. By relying on a complete system of demand, rather than on single equ...
